The Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia marked two years since the opening of the first program for financing scientific projects

The Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia marked two years since the opening of the first program for financing scientific projects.

Since its founding, the Science Fund has opened five programs and supported research in all areas of science. The Science Fund is currently funding 177 science projects with a total budget of almost 14m euros. More than 800 researchers from 75 scientific research organizations from Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Nis, Cacak and Novi Pazar are participating in the projects.

Out of the total budget of all programs, 3.4 million euros were invested in equipment, which is a direct investment of the Science Fund in scientific research organizations in Serbia.

The first projects started with the realization a year ago, but in this short time, despite the difficult conditions caused by the pandemic, the scientists worked hard and published dozens of scientific papers in international journals.

Within the previous programs, 26 projects include the development of solutions that will have direct application in the economy.

In four programs, projects are already largely being implemented, while in the IDEAS program, projects are in the evaluation phase, for which more than 1,000 foreign experts from over 60 countries have been hired. Scientists applied to the IDEAS program with more than 900 project proposals.

The IDEA program is the largest and most complex program of the Science Fund in terms of its scope, budget and criteria. Given the great interest of researchers, in the coming period it is expected to increase the budget for the IDEAS Program in order to support as many projects for funding. Thanks to the rapid development of our institution, the great response of scientists to the Fund's competitions, but also the praise of international experts when it comes to the quality of projects approved so far, in addition to budget funds, financial resources of the World Bank and the European Union have been provided. Thanks to that, we are currently working on defining a multi-year program plan and public calls that will bring new opportunities for our scientists.
