JOINT COMMUNICATION FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO), THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO) AND THE WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION (WIPO)

Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, together with Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization, met at the meeting agreed on June 15th to enhance joint cooperation and support in the global approach to medical technologies to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Directors-General of WHO, WIPO and WTO, in the spirit of long-term cooperation of these three world organizations, emphasized their commitment to universal and equal access to vaccines, therapy, diagnostics and other medical technologies that help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. They also agreed to step up support to all member states battling the pandemic through co-operation in a series of workshops to improve the flow of pandemic information. The first of these workshops will address the protection of intellectual property rights and know-how, as well as technology transfer and licensing.

Another important result of this meeting is the implementation of a common platform for tripartite technical support related to access to medical technologies, which will be provided to all governments of the member states of these organizations.
