The first prototype of the first Serbian respirator was developed

Serbian startup company Smart Research and the Mihajlo Pupin Institute have developed a prototype of the first Serbian respirator, Nenad Popovic, Minister of Innovation and Technological Development, told Tanjug. The State Innovation Fund supported a public call for the results of which was announced on March 26 by Smart Research with 5.54 million dinars for the development and production of five prototypes of automatic mechanical ventilation devices with positive pressure.

"It is a great victory for the Serbian mind and a victory for the knowledge of Serbian engineers," Popovic said, adding that the technological solutions would be used in the production of Serbian respirators for the treatment of patients infected with coronary virus.
He added that the design of this product was adapted to rapid manufacturing technologies, 3D printing, CNC machines and laser cutters, and that most of the components were manufactured in Serbia.

"Five prototype devices have been manufactured so far, and according to their verification, the production capacity of the Mihajlo Pupin Institute could be ten complete devices a day," Popovic said, adding that with the support of partners from the dedicated industry, it is possible to significantly increase production capacity.

The Minister stated that the primary objective was to successfully develop the device in a given period and to confirm all the necessary technical characteristics for a highly sophisticated medical device of this type.

This phase of development is completed within 30 days, as provided for in the financing agreement between the Innovation Fund and Smart Research.

The presentation of the first Serbian respirator will be held next week, Popovic said.

He pointed out that the team, which developed this respirator, involved numerous engineers, mechanical engineers and developers primarily from the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, as well as physicians anesthetists and a molecular biologist.
