New alternative respirator - solution of experts from the Faculty of Mechanical and Medical Faculty in Belgrade

A team of young experts from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, in collaboration with doctors from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, is working on the development of a new type of respirator that operates on the principle of an automated ambulance balloon.

"This is what our device differs from the existing solutions of hospital respirators based on the turbine compressors," said the leader of the project team, Doc. Zarko Miskovic, PhD.

The system is designed so that it can work on both electricity and handheld propulsion. This is very important in urgent situations when, for example, there is a power failure or during transport of life-threatening patients. Then, the device can be used in patients who are aware and try to breathe, but also in patients unconscious. It also enables invasive and non-invasive respiraction – through masks or tubus. It is intended for all racial categories – both children and adults. It occupies less space than other solutions because it is designed to be vertical. It is relatively small mass, which makes it easily removable.

The idea of using an ambulance in the respirators is not new. It was first presented about ten years ago at the US University of M.I.T.. However, the model had certain shortcomings that were removed in the new device.

"By analyzing the existing solutions, we have come to the idea that we are automating. Mounted sensors provide pressure control and volume of fluid (air), as is tracking levels of oxygen in blood, humidity, temperature, pulse. The device also has six built-in alarms that signal when there is a problem in the system, which further increases the patient's security, "explains assistant Professor Miskovic.

In addition to patients, medical personnel are protected. Our experts have devised an innovative way of bidirectional automation and sterilization of the fluid that the patient inhales or rises. In this purpose, the sterilization and filtration system can also be used to sterilize the device itself

The basic prototype of the first domestic respirator with an automated ambulance was created. Currently, we are working on his further development and optimization of applied construction solutions, improving microelectronics and adapting user interface to the requirements of medical personnel.

Constructors expect that the device will soon be ready for verification (technical and medical) and, after that, and for use. One of the key reasons why the ambulance was taken as the basis for the development of a new respirator is that such equipment has been standardized for a long time and has been regularly used in medical institutions for decades.

The stakeholders for the production of this respirator have, but still evaluate the profitability of the device, the availability of the necessary components, as well as the possibilities for optimization of the production process.
